Since January 2014, sales tax has been charged on medical cannabis, and since October 17, 2018, an additional excise tax has been introduced by the Government of Canada.

The Medical Cannabis Tax Ticker uses an estimation of how much tax revenue the Government of Canada collects from patients, down to the second.

This is the formula:

(Weight of Cannabis Sold) x (Average Price per Gram Sold) x [(Weighted Average of Sales Tax) + (Weighted Average of Excise Tax)] x Number of Days

Data for the Medical Cannabis Tax Ticker was collected from Health Canada, Statistics Canada, and Federal Department of Finance.

The excise tax rate used is $1.20/gram, which combines the federally mandated $1/g, plus additional provincial cannabis duties levied in Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Nunavut considering the ad valorem premium for more expensive cannabis products.
